Delaware College and Newark in the Era of Slavery, Indentured Labor, and Abolition

Please join us at 2pm on Tuesday, December 7th  for “Delaware College and Newark in the Era of Slavery, Indentured Labor, and Abolition,” a virtual presentation in the UD Libraries Scholar in the Library series.

At this online event, students and faculty from the Fall 2021 interdisciplinary seminar "Race & Inequality in Delaware" will present research on the history of Delaware College (the predecessor institution of the University of Delaware) during the  antebellum period, c.1830s-1850s. Using materials from Special Collections in Morris Library and University Archives, students have investigated Delaware College's ties to slavery and its relationship to neighboring communities of African Americans, free and unfree.

Inspired by the UD Antiracism Initiative, this class is the first in a series of team-taught seminars that will examine legacies of slavery and dispossession in Delaware's past and ask how to redress these histories in the present.
